Frequently asked questions
What does Shade do?
Shade is a tanning timer and UV index app for iPhone and Apple Watch. It estimates your burn time from the live UV index, your skin type and your sunscreen, then counts it down during a session with turn-over and reapply cues.
Is Shade free?
Yes. The live UV index, your burn-time estimate, widgets and your first full sun session are free. Shade Plus, a monthly or yearly subscription, adds unlimited sessions, the Live Activity countdown, cues, alerts and history.
Where does the UV data come from?
From Apple Weather, for your current location. Burn-time estimates follow WHO UV Index guidance and standard Fitzpatrick skin-type values.
Does Shade work on Apple Watch?
Yes. The Watch app shows the current UV index and complications; with Shade Plus you can also start and follow sessions from your wrist.
Is Shade available on Android?
No. Shade is built for iPhone and Apple Watch only.
Does the burn time mean I won’t burn?
No. It’s an estimate. Altitude, reflection from sand or water, medication and your own skin all change the real answer. Shade is informational, not medical advice.
