About Shade

Shade is a tanning timer and UV index app for iPhone and Apple Watch. It’s made by Vibrantvibes OÜ, a small independent studio in Estonia.

It exists because most people judge the sun by how warm it feels, and heat tells you nothing about UV. A cool, breezy day at the beach can carry a UV index of 8. Shade turns the live UV index, your skin type and your sunscreen into one number you can act on: an estimated burn time, counted down while you’re out.

We keep the numbers honest. UV data comes from Apple Weather. Burn-time estimates follow WHO UV Index guidance and standard Fitzpatrick skin-type values, sunscreen is counted conservatively, and every estimate is shown as an estimate. Shade is informational, not a medical device.

There’s no account and no sign-up. Your location is sent only to Apple Weather, as a coordinate, to fetch UV data.
