Shade has free widgets for your iPhone Home Screen and Lock Screen that show the current UV index, your estimated burn time and how UV moves through the day. You can check today’s UV the moment you pick up your phone, without opening the app.
The three widgets
- UV & Burn Time: the current UV index and your estimated burn time. Comes in a small Home Screen size, which also has a button to start a session, and in circular, rectangular and inline Lock Screen sizes.
- UV Today: a medium widget with the day’s UV curve, the peak and your burn time. Handy for planning when to head out.
- Sun Window: sunrise, sunset and the time UV peaks today. Small on the Home Screen or rectangular on the Lock Screen.
Why a widget helps
UV changes a lot in a day, and it isn’t always obvious from the weather. A bright but cool morning in spring can already be high UV, and a hazy afternoon can still be strong. A widget keeps the number in view, so you notice when it’s worth covering up or reaching for sunscreen.
How they stay current
The widgets read the latest data the Shade app has fetched from Apple Weather. They refresh when that data changes and at the top of every hour. If you haven’t opened Shade yet after installing, open it once so the widgets have something to show.
Pair them with
The UV forecast in the app goes further with the hourly curve, and on Apple Watch the same numbers are available as complications.
About the numbers
UV data comes from Apple Weather. Burn-time estimates follow WHO UV Index guidance and standard skin-type values. They’re estimates for your skin type and protection, not a measurement.
